Mulligans

Your strokes become do overs.

Wherever your handicap gives you a stroke on a hole, you do not take a net score. You get a do over on any shot on that hole. Two strokes on a hole is two swings back. Nothing carries, so what you do not use on a hole is gone. Every game the group is running that day scores off gross, which means the same stroke is never spent twice.

Simulator Simulated round

Learn how to play hole by hole with this built in simulator.

This is a simulated round, not a live game. Four made up players, eighteen made up holes, so you can watch exactly how Mulligans is scored before you ever tee it up.

Four players, eighteen holes, gross scores.

Mini tournament Tournament

Tournaments of any size

It is easy to set up tournaments of all sizes and formats with Big Fairways. A three day golf trip with four buddies, or 144 players in a local charity event, we have you covered. And groups inside your tournament can still play their own side games while the competition runs.

What is Mulligans in golf?

Mulligans is the simplest format in golf. It is not a game with its own players and its own points, it is a layer you switch on for the whole round. Wherever the card says you get a stroke, that stroke turns into a do over on any shot on that hole. Two strokes on a hole is two do overs. You can spend one off the tee and one on a putt, or both on the same shot, or neither. Unused ones die at the hole and nothing ever carries. Your gross score is your score, so every other game running that day is scored off gross too and the same stroke is never spent twice.

How do you play Mulligans?

Why golfers love it

It is the only format where a high handicap gets to feel like a low one. A do over is not a stroke handed to you at the end of the hole, it is a swing you get to take again while your friends are watching, and it turns the shot that would have ruined your round into the shot everybody talks about. It also speeds a group up, because nobody is doing net arithmetic on the green.

How Big Fairways runs it for you

Pick Mulligans when you set up the round, choose who is in, and start playing. The app prompts you at each step, keeps the running points, and lets you run other side games at the same time without the totals getting tangled. At the end you get one clean total per player and the shortest possible list of payments.

Send one link and your group follows the leaderboard live from their own phones, whether they are in your cart or watching from the clubhouse. Every round you post is saved to your own lifetime scorecard, which only you can see.

Common questions

How many mulligans do you get?

As many as your handicap gives you strokes. A 12 handicap gets a do over on the twelve hardest holes on the card. A 22 gets one on every hole and a second one on the four hardest.

Do unused mulligans carry to the next hole?

No. Whatever you do not use on a hole is gone when you walk to the next tee. Nothing carries and nothing is worth anything at the end.

Do you still get a net score?

No, and that is the point. On a dot hole you take the do over instead of the net score, never both. Your gross number is your number for every game the group is running.

Can you play Mulligans with other side games?

Yes, that is how it is meant to run. Switch it on for the round and every other game scores off gross, so a stroke is either a do over or nothing at all.

Do you have to play for money?

No. Big Fairways counts points. What your group decides to do with those points afterwards is entirely up to the group, and the app never handles anyone's money.

Is Big Fairways free?

Yes, free while we build it. Every side game, the live leaderboard, the settle up totals and your lifetime scorecards are all included, and there is nothing to install because it runs in any phone browser.
