Gridiron is a two on two team game that is similar to VEGAS. Your two scores combine to make a double digit number. If you get a par 3 and your teammate gets a bogey 4, then your team score is 34. The difference between your team’s score and theirs determines if the offense scored or got stuffed. Reach the opponent’s 35 to get a FG. Cross the goal line for 6, 7 or 8 points. Lose the hole when on Offense and you get pushed backwards, punt, and they return it for field position. Each team gets Nine holes on Offense, and Nine on Defense. The 9th and 18th holes are worth double. It’s fun, and Big Fairways does all the math for you!
Your two net scores make one number, low ball first. Win the hole and every point you win it by marches the ball three yards. Reach their 35 at the end of the hole for a field goal, cross the goal line for a touchdown.
Win the hole on defense and every point pushes their ball back a yard, then they punt and your side takes over. Possession changes every tee, whatever happened.
Field goal three. Touchdown six, seven if you clear the goal line by ten yards, eight if you clear it by a hundred. Holes nine and eighteen are worth double.
This is a simulated round, not a live game. This simulation uses fake players and fake scores that run on the game’s rules engine. The field fills in as the drive plays out, and the scoreboard keeps the game.
Gridiron Golf is a two on two golf game scored like a football game, and it is exclusive to Big Fairways. Your side has two net scores. Put the low ball first and the high ball second and you have one number, say a 45. The other side does the same, say a 34. The difference between those two numbers is the points that side won the hole by, and in this game points are yards.
Win the hole on offense and every point moves the ball three yards down the field. Lose it and every point they won pushes your ball one yard backwards, and then you punt. That is the whole engine. Everything else in the game, the field goal, the touchdown, the punt, the return, the two minute warning, is what happens when the ball ends up somewhere interesting.
| Players | Four, two a side. The app puts the highest and lowest handicaps together by default, easy to change. |
|---|---|
| The number | Each side's two net scores, low ball first. A 4 and a 5 is 45. The difference is the points. |
| Offense | Three yards a point. The first drive starts on the own 25. |
| Defense | One yard a point, backwards, then the punt. The defense's points also ride the return. |
| The bonus | Every shot under par on a side is a step, and the two partners add up. The other side's steps come off the top. One step doubles the yards, two triples, three quadruples. |
| Scores | Field goal from inside their 35, three. Touchdown six, seven with ten yards to spare, eight with a hundred. |
| Doubles | Holes nine and eighteen double the yards for both sides. Possession changes every tee. |
| Scored by | The Big Fairways app, free, with the field drawn on the phone. |
You play a normal round in two pairs and the app moves the ball after every hole. Here is the whole game in eight steps.
Because scraping over the line should pay less than driving through it. Reaching the end zone is six. Clear the goal line by ten yards or more and it is seven. Clear it by a hundred, which takes a monster of a hole, and it is eight. Anything left over after that is thrown away, so there is no bank and nothing carries. The next drive starts on the own 25 and the game moves on. Eight is the hard ceiling on one drive, which is what keeps the scoreboard readable.
Lose a hole on offense and two things happen at once. The points they won push your ball backwards at a yard apiece, and then you punt from wherever you ended up. The punt lands halfway between there and the goal line you were attacking, and the side receiving it adds those same points to the return. A hole you lose by fourteen is not just a lost hole, it is a punt from your own 11 and fourteen yards run back at you. Get pushed far enough backwards and the ball goes through your own goal line, a defensive touchdown worth six to the side that did the pushing.
Your side has the ball on the own 25. You make a net four and your partner a net five, 45. They post a five and a six, 56. You win the hole by eleven, thirty three yards, so the ball is on the own 58, their 42. Possession changes and they take the ball. On the next hole they post a 34 against your 45 with a net birdie on their side, so the bonus doubles their yards: eleven points, sixty six yards, from their own 25 to your 9. Inside your 35 at the end of the hole, field goal, three points. Then the ball comes back to you on your own 25 and the drive starts again.
Holes nine and eighteen. Every yard is doubled for both sides, so a game that looked finished is not. Possession changes every tee, which by itself gives the side that opened holes one and nine and the other side holes ten and eighteen, so each side gets one doubled hole on offense and one on defense. The app calls it as it happens, along with the quarters, halftime and the stand, where a defense shoves an offense back out of field goal range and takes the ball right there.
Gridiron Golf is Vegas with field position, so where the ball is changes what a hole is worth. A few things win it more often than good golf does.
Gridiron Golf is a team game with field position: the two numbers come from Vegas, everything else comes from football. Here is how it lines up against the other side games. Every one of them is scored in the app, and you can run several at once on one card.
| Game | Players | In one line |
|---|---|---|
| Gridiron Golf | 4 | Two on two played like football. Win the hole to march the ball, reach the end zone to score. |
| Midnight | Any | Twelve holes count, your best eleven plus the last. Lowest card wins. |
| Elevens | Any | Eleven holes count, your best ten plus the last. Seven throwaways. |
| Skins | Any | Win the hole outright to take the skin. Ties carry over or die, your call. |
| Nassau | 2 or 4 | Three matches in one: front nine, back nine and the full eighteen, with presses. |
| Wolf | 4 | The Wolf picks a partner after the tee shots or goes alone for double. |
| Vegas | 4 | Two teams, scores paired into a number, low number wins the difference. |
| Banker | 3 or more | One player takes on everybody else each hole. Presses allowed. |
| Junk | Any | Points for the little things: sandies, greenies, woodies and more. |
| Match Play | 2 | Head to head, hole by hole, up or down. |
| TILT | Any | Points on the net score with a multiplier that climbs on birdies and resets on a par. |
| Train | Any | A net par puts you aboard and every hole after it pays until two bogeys in a row. |
| Mulligans | Any | Your handicap strokes become do overs, then everybody plays gross. |
| Hammer | 2 or 4 | Either side can double the hole while it is being played. |
| Nines | 3 | Three players, nine points a hole, split five, three and one. |
| Hi Lo | 4 | Two on two. A point for the best ball and a point for the worst. |
| Snake | Any | Three putt and the snake is yours until somebody else does. No points. |
| Bingo Bango Bongo | Any | First on, closest, first in. Three points a hole, played gross. |
| Stableford | Any | Points for every hole, most points wins, a blow up costs you nothing. |

The rules of the game itself are fixed in the app: three yards a point, one back on defense, the team bonus, the field goal at their 35, six, seven or eight for a touchdown, doubles on nine and eighteen. The only calls on the first tee are who has the ball and what the win is worth.
Because a golf hole has never felt like third and long before. Two pars against two bogeys is a drive down the field, a birdie is a bonus that doubles the yards, a lost hole is a punt and a return, and the eighteenth is the two minute warning with everything doubled. The field is on the phone, the drive chart reads back like a commentator, and the group is talking about field position instead of scores.
Pick Gridiron Golf at setup, take the sides the app suggests or move a name, say who has the ball first, and play. The field sits at the top of the hole screen with the ball on it. Put the last score in and the drive plays out in front of you: the yards, the bonus, the punt and the return. The scoreboard keeps the game, the drive chart calls every hole back off the real scores, and the app calls the quarters, halftime and the two minute warning as they happen.
Run other side games at the same time and the totals never get tangled. At the end the side ahead takes the agreed amount, or the difference in points at a value per point, you get one Settle Up list, and every round posts to your own lifetime scorecard, which only you can see. Send one link and the whole group follows the game live from their own phones.
The ball is drawn on a real field at the top of the hole screen. Put the last score in and that drive plays out in front of you, punt and return included.
Your group can scan the QR code to join in the fun, keep their stats, and see the live scoreboard. Send a text link to let your fans, friends and family watch the game swing.
Whether you are playing as teams, groups or individually, or all of the above, the points tally correctly no matter how many side games you have going.
Every hole is called back the way a commentator would call it, off the real scores and nothing else. Tap any hole to watch that drive again after the round.
It is easy to set up tournaments of all sizes and formats with Big Fairways. A three day golf trip with four players, or 144 players in a local charity event, we have you covered. And groups inside your tournament can still play their own side games while the competition runs.
Two on two. Each side's two net scores make one number, low ball first, and the difference is the points. On offense a point marches the ball three yards, on defense a point pushes it back a yard and then the offense punts. Finish inside their 35 for a field goal, cross the goal line for a touchdown. Possession changes every tee.
Six. Seven if you clear the goal line by ten yards or more. Eight if you clear it by a hundred. Nothing carries after a score and the next drive starts on the own 25.
Every shot under par on a side is a step and the two partners add up. The other side's steps come off the top, so only one side holds the bonus. One step doubles the yards, two triples them, three quadruples them.
The points they won push your ball back a yard apiece, then you punt from there. The punt lands halfway to the goal line and the other side adds the same points to the return.
No. The two numbers are made the same way, but Vegas is points and Gridiron is yards on a field with field goals, touchdowns, punts and a scoreboard. Gridiron Golf is exclusive to Big Fairways.
Nine and eighteen, the two minute warning. Every yard is doubled for both sides.
Yes, free while we build it. Every side game, the live leaderboard, the Settle Up totals and your lifetime scorecards are all included, and there is nothing to install because it runs in any phone browser.
Set it up in four taps, send the link to the group, and let the app move the ball.
